Songbirds South Stage
Chattanooga, TN
When we were approached to be a part of the revitalization of the historic Chattanooga Choo-Choo we were eager to contribute. Our goal was to transform the unique triangular-shaped space at the end of the southern wing of the building into a music venue and bar. Through space planning and interior design, we created complementary relationships between the bar—a place to relax—and the concert venue space—a place to rock. Framing smaller zones through ceiling height, lighting, furniture and material, we were able to create niche seating areas in the bar that break the larger space into intimate zones to lounge and enjoy music.
For the South Stage area, our design opened up the space and deliberately left a raw feel where the focus is on the stage at the end of the narrowing space. This contrast was accentuated in the back bar design. While the lounge bar gives a nod to the traditional with marble tops, custom woodwork and vintage mirrors with accents of gold, the South Stage bar remains raw with riveted sheet metal tops and asymmetric shelving framed by a jigsaw wall of salvaged speakers. Both spaces spill onto a raised patio along pedestrian friendly Station Street, making them key elements in a burgeoning entertainment district.
